Stipendium Hungaricum Scholarship Program

The Stipendium Hungaricum scholarship program was established by the Hungarian government to promote the internationalization of Hungarian higher education.

It is based on bilateral education agreements between Hungary and the sending countries. It is presently available in over 80 countries and territories across five continents, attracting over 5000 international students each year. Applicants can choose from over 600 full-degree programs spanning all fields of higher education.

It includes the following:

  • A monthly scholarship amount of 103 EUR per month for 12 months each year, till completion of studies.
  • The stipend involves the absence of a tuition fee if granted.
  • Either a free dorm room or a monthly payment of 97 EUR/month toward housing costs is offered for the duration of the scholarship. (If the student does not live in the dorm, the 97 EUR/month payment is a contribution to the rental costs). 
  • Students are given free medical insurance worth 153 EUR a year. 

Bilateral State Scholarships

The Bilateral state scholarships are based on agreements between the governments of two countries. Scholarships are awarded by the Hungarian side, as well as the foreign partner country. These are awarded to foreign students, researchers, and lecturers at higher education institutions as well as scientific and creative institutes who wish to study in Hungary. The application for the scholarships must be submitted through the Tempus Public Foundation website. The scholarship is available for full-degree bachelor, master, or doctoral studies.

CEEPUS

The CEEPUS Program promotes the cross-border mobility of students and teachers. This is mainly for people in Central and Southeast Europe. For a semester, students can study abroad, and professors can teach at a partner university. These initiatives are aimed at assisting Central European academics. This is done by strengthening their professional and personal connections. In Hungary, the initiative is managed by the Tempus Public Foundation.

  • If you are an enrolled student or a teacher at an accredited university/college in any of the other CEEPUS member countries. Then you are eligible to apply for a CEEPUS scholarship at a Hungarian higher education institution.
  • If you are applying for a student grant, you must have completed at least two semesters of your studies. 
  • The scholarship rate was $309* through December 31, 2021, for Undergraduate students in a university or college. This also includes graduates up to the MA level, postgraduates, and Ph.D. students.
  • Receiving a second mobility scholarship from another source to pay expenditures is not allowed.

EEA Grants Scholarship program

The EEA Grants Scholarship program is part of the EEA Grants program. This aims to reduce economic and social disparities and strengthen bilateral cooperation between donor countries. Features under this scholarship:

  • As an incoming student to Hungary, you are entitled to a one-time travel contribution of $523* and a monthly grant of $418* during your studies.
  • In case you are participating in summer school, you will receive a lump sum of $942*  for the whole month of your stay (including travel cost contribution).
  • Some universities offer various intensive preparatory courses before you travel. Such courses might also be covered by the scholarship fund.
  • If you have completed at least two semesters of your studies prior to beginning your mobility period. You are then entitled to apply for a scholarship.
