The International College of Liberal Arts (iCLA) is a liberal arts college that primarily follows the American curriculum with English as the language of instruction. The college is under the aegis of the Yamanashi Gakuin University which was founded in 1946. ICLA provides its students with the opportunity to customize their course in a multi-cultural Japanese environment, just 90 minutes away from Tokyo. With a student population of 66% international students, iCLA helps in nurturing a globalized perspective alongside a deep appreciation for Japanese culture.

Programs & Courses offered by the International College of Liberal Arts

iCLA confers a Bachelor of Liberal Arts degree upon its students. The curriculum is designed such that students can select between any one of the four majors offered by the college. 

To help them make an informed decision regarding their major, students take courses from iCLA’s core curriculum during their first year. 

The popular major choices for international students include

  • Global Business and Economics
  • Political Science
  • Interdisciplinary Arts
  • Japan Studies

In addition to this, both domestic and international students are provided with the opportunity to study abroad with one of the college’s 70+ partner institutions. For Japanese students, 2 semesters of studying abroad are compulsory but for international students, this is optional. 

A unique Career Design course is also offered by iCLA. Career Design 1 is a mandatory course for all students enrolled in the university and is offered in both English and Japanese. The course serves to increase employability and act as a foundation for career selection and development.

Campus and accommodation

On-campus student housing can be availed by all students. At the International College of Liberal Arts, each floor of the residence halls contains three units. These units comprise common facilities like kitchens and washrooms alongside eight private rooms. Students are also given access to a laundry room at all times of the day.

The layout has been constructed such that the residence halls are also connected directly to the iCLA building. This gives students convenient access to classrooms. Grocery stores, cafes, and restaurants are all located within walking distance and ensure a comfortable living experience.

A fully-equipped cafeteria is also operational at all times. Students can enroll themselves in a meal plan. The cafeteria serves nutritious meals three times a day on weekdays and caters to everyone’s requirements. It is important to note that all first-year students are required to live in the iCLA residence halls and enroll in the meal plan. 

Admission requirements for international students

International students from over 30 countries across the globe study in iCLA. Applicants who wish to enroll in the International College of Liberal Arts will be first required to fill out a detailed application form and then apply for a Japanese visa. 

To make the entire process simpler, they can also apply via Gyanberry, an official partner of the International College of Liberal Arts, Japan.

Undergraduate Admissions

Certain eligibility criteria must be met by applicants. They are expected to possess

  • A high school diploma 
  • Passing marks in a standardized qualification test such as the SAT
  • A TOEFL iBT score of 76, a TOEFL PBT score of 550, an IELTS score of 6.0, or equivalent accepted English language qualification

To proceed, students must also attach photocopies of documents including 

  • Past academic transcripts
  • A passport or official photo ID
  • Digitally scanned copies of any certificates 
  • A Statement of Purpose
  • Two recommendation letters

After paying the application fee of 57 USD, students should await further instructions from iCLA. An interview will soon be conducted as part of the application screening process. 

Tuition, fees, and total cost of attendance

An annual tuition fee expense of 15,700 USD will have to be incurred by students in the first year of their 4-year Bachelor of Liberal Arts program. In years 2, 3, and 4, the annual tuition fee is 13,950 USD.

Thus, the annual total cost of attendance for international students enrolled at iCLA comes out to be between 22,000 to 24,000 USD or 81,000 to 88,000 AED. 

Scholarships for international students

Full and partial tuition-waiver Scholarships

Depending on the student’s academic results, extracurricular achievements, and financial needs, a 100%, 75%, 50%, or 25% waiver of tuition, facility, and equipment fees is provided by the International College of Liberal Arts. 

The scholarship can be renewed each year of the 4-year long course based on the applicant’s overall performance. 

JASSO External Scholarship (for Pre-Arrival Admission International Degree-Seeking Students)

The Japan Student Services Organization (JASSO) provides financial aid to several international students looking to pursue higher education in Japan. 

The scholarship is provided on a monthly basis and the scholarship amount is 392 USD, subject to change.
