Scholarships to study medicine in Turkey for international students

Turkish universities are among the finest in Europe, with more than ten universities ranking in the top 1,000 for clinical medicine in the U.S. News Rankings. The prime reasons to study medicine (MD or MBBS) in Turkey are its inexpensive tuition fees and high educational standards. Plus, Turkish universities are also known to offer a plethora of scholarships to international students. These scholarships are available to medical students as well. Scholarships to study medicine in Turkey are offered as merit-based, tuition waivers, or as financial aid. These are funded by 

  • The Republic of Turkey
  • Turkish Scholarships and the Council of Higher Education (CoHE)
  • Students’ home countries 
  • National and international agencies and organizations
  • University scholarships

The amount of scholarship varies depending on the type of scholarship. Let us discuss a few important ones. 

Türkiye scholarships

Türkiye scholarships are government-funded scholarship programs that allow qualified overseas students from all over the world to study at Turkey’s leading universities. Türkiye scholarships offer various programs for students at all levels of education, as well as tailored and partnered programs for specific target groups. Programs range from full-time degrees to short-term specialized programs. The scholarships are also awarded to students who participate in social and cultural activities in addition to education. Eligibility for undergraduate medical programs like medicine, dentistry, and pharmacy 

  • Student should be under 21 years of age 
  • Must have scored 90% marks 

There are three types of Türkiye scholarships:

  1. Full-time scholarships
  2. Short-term scholarships
  3. Joint scholarship programs 

Students must create an account on the Türkiye scholarship application system. The next step is to choose the program and university and submit the application along with the required documents. Here is a list of documents that are required 

  • Passport or identity card
  • Photograph (taken not older than one year)
  • Exam results (SAT, ACT, or TQDK, whichever is applicable)
  • High school diploma certificate and transcripts
  • English language test proficiency results such as TOEFL or IELTS (for English-taught programs)
  • Motivation letter

Note: Selected students must attend the 1-year Turkish language proficiency course and attain the C1 level by the end of their academic year.

Full-time scholarships

These are awarded to students attending full-time degree programs that include bachelor’s, master’s, and Ph.D. degrees except for two-year associate or vocational degrees. They cover the following:

  • University placement  
  • Monthy stipend (1,000 TL or 53.6 USD)
  • Tuition fees
  • Turkish language course for 1 year 
  • Health insurance 
  • Accommodation 
  • Two flight tickets (to enter and leave the country after graduation) 

Medical students are eligible for the undergraduate scholarship program and merit scholarships program under the full-time scholarships. 

Undergraduate scholarship program

The undergraduate Scholarship Program is for students who are pursuing a bachelor’s degree in fields, such as engineering, health sciences, humanities, or social sciences. The applications must be submitted in January-February each year. 

Merit scholarships program

The aim of this scholarship is to motivate students to study in Turkey. It is awarded to prospective as well as existing students. It is given to students with  

  • International and language proficiency 
  • Those who ranked top in their home country
  • Existing students with a GPA above 3.5 out of 4 

The eligible students for the merit scholarship program receive a monthly stipend two times higher than the regular stipend. 

Short-term scholarships

Success scholarship program

Overseas students with an excellent academic record  are eligible for success scholarships. They should study and live in Turkey and meet the other requirements. Students must submit an online application for the success scholarships. 

Duration  1-year
Scholarship benefits  Monthly allowance of 500 TL or 27 USD

The scholarship does not cover accommodation or other living expenses. 

Joint scholarship programs 

These are offered by international organizations and other public institutions to students belonging to disadvantaged groups. These scholarships include

  • Albert Einstein German Academic Refugee Initiative (DAFI) Scholarship Program
  • Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Scholarship Program
  • Yemeni Pioneers Scholarship Program
  • World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) Scholarship
  • Higher Education Support Program
  • Türkiye Scholarships Baykar Technology Joint Scholarship Program
  • SPARK Scholarship Program

CoHE scholarship for international students

Overseas students from countries that have signed protocols of understanding with the Council of Higher Education (CoHE) are eligible to apply for this scholarship. These scholarships are offered at undergraduate and graduate levels. They cover tuition fees, Turkish language education fees, accommodation, and general health insurance fees. The following is a list of nations and the distribution of scholarships by country.

University scholarships 

Turkish universities offer numerous scholarships to medical students. These are either awarded as merit-based scholarships, economic support to students from financially challenged backgrounds, or tuition waivers. Students are evaluated based on the criteria set by the specific university and given financial, food, and accommodation support. For instance, Ankara University offers financial support to students in need in exchange for part-time work at the university. Students at Istanbul Okan University receive a 10% tuition waiver if they are spouses and children of martyrs, veterans, and educators; children of university employees; and brothers and sisters of full-time students at the university. 

Altinbas University offers tuition waivers (either full or half) as undergraduate admission scholarships to its undergraduate students. There is also a merit-based scholarship for students who score well in the university entrance exam. Similarly, it offers martyrs’ children scholarships, participating in sports and arts, and honors scholarships. Istanbul Aydin University provides in-course scholarships to students admitted to undergraduate, graduate, and doctorate degrees at the university. 

Students at Halic University are given merit scholarships (15%) once they complete their first year of education at the university. Eastern Mediterranean University medical students are entitled to apply for a number of scholarships that fall in the range of full, 50%, and 25%. They are offered as tuition fee waivers, honor awards, sports grants, research grants, and discounts. Successful students are also eligible for Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) scholarships.
