The Peralta Colleges, also known as Peralta Community College District is an association of four colleges; Berkeley City College, Laney College and Merritt College in Oakland, and College of Alameda. All these colleges are public institutions. The aim is to provide education to students at reasonable tuition fees. Berkeley City College was established in 1974. Merritt College was established as a general campus in 1954. Laney College was established in 1970, and the College of Alameda was established in 1971. 

The Peralta Community College District is governed by an elected board of trustees that is a bench of seven members. The colleges under Peralta Community District have an acceptance rate of about 100%. Laney is the largest of the four colleges of the Peralta Community College. These colleges have the aim of educating as many as students they can at a subsidized fee.
